Former Sandown teacher discovers two of his students are running in the election too
As a teacher, Gary says he is always perturbed by comments that young people are apathetic or not interested in politics
Following news earlier in the week of a former teacher standing in the 2021 Isle of Wight council elections and discovering during a Zoom call that two of his students were standing alongside him, we have news of more teacher and students candidates.
Gary Clarke taught at Sandown High School (which became Sandown Bay Academy and now The Bay CE School) from 2001 to 2017 and was staff governor and head of sixth form for most of that time.

GMB: Proposals raise more questions than give answers
The Bay, which took over the former Academies Enterprise Trust, Sandown Bay Academy, has developed proposals which raise more questions than give answers, the GMB says.
The proposed changes could see up to 15 jobs axed, with remaining staff suffering detrimental changes to their working hours and other terms and conditions.

They say after keeping the school going during Covid, some catching the virus themselves, they are now being badly treated. Several trade unions have joined forces to call for cost-cutting proposals at the Sandown school to be scrapped and have questioned the rationale behind it. GMB, Unison, NASUWT and NEU Unions expressed concerns following the resumption of budget-slashing consultation meetings. A joint statement issued by the school and the Isle of Wight Council said the current staffing model was unaffordable . Legend Of Isle Of Wight Athletics - Ray Scovell - Has Died

He passed away after contracting COVID-19.
Ray would often be seen at the running track at Sandown Bay Academy. He was the coach of the Isle of Wight Athletics Club for more than 30 years - and founded Park Run on the Island.
Medina Junior Park Run is among those to have paid tribute. Posting on Facebook, it said: It is with great sadness I have to say our parkrun founder and true inspiration to all Ray Scovell has passed away - our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
