New York City schools are slated to get $1.3 billion more than last year under the state’s budget expected to pass Wednesday, providing a massive financial boost as students and educators rebound from more than a year of disrupted learning.
In all, New York City schools are expected to get $11.86 billion from the state plus $6.9 billion from the federal government.
The state’s budget plan, which covers April 1 through March 30, 2022, would have been hard to fathom last summer, when Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned that a pandemic-fueled budget crisis could mean up to 20% cuts for education funding.

School districts are starting to outline plans for proms and graduation ceremonies this spring, even as they call on state officials to offer school-specific guidelines to work from.
Dozens of superintendents across the region on Wednesday sent a joint letter to state Health Commissioner Howard Zucker asking for new guidelines that specifically address end-of-year school events like proms and graduation ceremonies.
“While schools are eager to commemorate milestone events and help students celebrate in a safe manner, we will not jeopardize our students’ or the public’s health in doing so,” the superintendents wrote in a joint letter from the Capital Region and Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES districts. “Guidance that directly addresses these events is critical.”

The latest federal stimulus bill hurtling through Congress would represent another massive infusion of money for New York schools – even as the specifics are still shrouded amid state budget uncertainty.
Schools across New York are set to receive about $9 billion combined in direct aid to districts, which comes on top of around $4 billion in direct federal aid to New York schools approved in December, money Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed allocating to districts next school year. Another $12.5 billion included in the new stimulus bill, which House lawmakers are expected to give final approval to Wednesday, would provide general funding to the state, which could be used to offset proposed cuts in state school aid.
