New York State aid proposal creates fiscal cliffs | News, Sports, Jobs

John Whittaker Dr. Kevin Whitaker can see the fiscal cliff for school districts coming and he’s not the only one. Whitaker recently touched on the issues Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed 2021-22 state budget presents for school districts. As Whitaker said a couple of weeks ago, the news for Jamestown’s 2021-22 budget is good. Cuomo budget proposal withdraws threat of 20 percent school aid cut

Cuomo budget proposal withdraws threat of 20 percent school aid cut | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 ALBANY Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday appeared to remove the looming threat of 20-percent reductions in school aid this year as he outlined a plan to rely on federal funding to maintain the state’s school funding levels. Cuomo and his budget officials said funds withheld earlier this year could be converted into permanent cuts of around 5 percent, but that 20 percent reductions would not be necessary this year, effectively eliminating the worst-case-scenario that Schenectady City School District officials have said drove their decision to lay off over 400 teachers and school staff. District leaders indicated in the past weeks they still believed a 20-percent reduction in aid this year was possible.

New federal money on its way to schools but state aid cuts still pose threat | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS New York school districts can expect an infusion of federal money totaling over $4 billion, but the state’s financial outlook still presents the risk that state aid cuts will offset the federal investment. The stimulus package passed by Congress on Monday night offers school districts about four times the amount of money districts received under the federal CARES act passed in the spring, allocating money to each district based on a formula that distributes federal aid based on school district needs.
