Singapore: Myanmar observers fear a full-blown military assault could come within days, after two Chinese-financed factories were burnt on Monday and dozens of protesters killed on the streets.
Protesters returned to the streets on Monday after a bloody Sunday in which the industrial township of Hlaing Thar Yar in western Yangon, the biggest city in Myanmar, was a major target of security forces, with the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reporting at least 22 killed and 20 wounded there alone.
The junta fired live rounds at protesters as the factories burnt. There has been a rising anti-Chinese sentiment in the country in the past month and a half, although it was unclear who was responsible for the factoriesâ destruction.
