Study suggests why portraying humans as healthy machines can backfire

Study suggests why portraying humans as healthy machines can backfire ANI | Updated: Feb 11, 2021 13:37 IST Washington [US], February 11 (ANI): Researchers from the University of Amsterdam and Stanford University published a new paper in the Journal of Marketing that explores how human-as-machine representations affect consumers specifically their eating behavior and health. The study, forthcoming in the Journal of Marketing, is titled Portraying Humans as Machines to Promote Health: Unintended Risks, Mechanisms, and Solutions and is authored by Andrea Weihrauch and Szu-Chi Huang. To combat obesity, governments, marketers, and consumer welfare organizations often encourage consumers to make food choices more rationally. One strategy used is to leverage human-as-machine representations portraying humans as machines. This approach tries to leverage people s existing associations about machines that machines make decisions rationally to help

A new method to predict individual risk of cognitive decline

A new method to predict individual risk of cognitive decline ANI | Updated: Feb 05, 2021 16:01 IST Washington [US], February 5 (ANI): The early prognosis of high-risk older adults for amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), using non-invasive and sensitive neuro markers, is key for early prevention of Alzheimer s disease, suggested the findings of a new study. The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer s Disease, by researchers at the University of Kentucky establishes what they believe is a new way to predict the risk years before a clinical diagnosis. Their work shows that direct measures of brain signatures during mental activity are more sensitive and accurate predictors of memory decline than current standard behavioural testing.

Study analyses hormone seasonality in humans

Tel Aviv [Israel], February 3 (ANI): A recent study has provided researchers with a dataset of millions of hormone tests from medical records that shows seasonality with a winter-spring peak in hormones for reproduction, growth, metabolism, and stress adaptation. The hormone seasonality indicates that, like other animals, humans may have a physiological peak season for basic biological functions.

Researchers develop proton trap for more precise drug delivery

Researchers develop proton trap for more precise drug delivery ANI | Updated: Jan 31, 2021 17:02 IST Linkoping [Sweden], January 31 (ANI): During a recent study, researchers have developed a proton trap that makes organic electronic ion pumps more precise when delivering drugs. This new finding will help in reducing drug side effects, and in the long term, they might help patients with symptoms of neurological diseases for which effective treatments are not available. The result of the research which was conducted by the researchers from Linkoping University, Sweden, has been published in Science Advances . Approximately 6 per cent of the world s population suffers from neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson s disease, and chronic pain. However, currently available drug delivery methods - mainly tablets and injections - place the drug in locations where it is not required. This can lead to side effects that harm the patient.

Male breast cancer patients at increased risk of heart disease: Study

Male breast cancer patients at increased risk of heart disease: Study ANI | Updated: Jan 31, 2021 17:03 IST Washington [US], January 31 (ANI): According to the findings of a new study, male breast cancer patients are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology s Advancing the Cardiovascular Care of the Oncology Patient Virtual course. Due to the rarity of male breast cancer, there is no cardiovascular data from larger clinical trials or population studies. The lack of large data makes it even more important to individualize cardiovascular assessment and management based on each patient s unique oncologic, therapeutic and pre-existing cardiovascular risk profile to support them through cancer treatment into survivorship, said Michael Ibrahim, a fourth-year medical student at Georgetown University and one of the study authors.
