Decreased Area A budget still supports many projects | East Kootenay, Elk Valley

Posted: May 22, 2021 Area A Director Mike Sosnowski In spite of a decrease of 4.1% on an average residential assessment for 2021, the Electoral Area A portion of the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) budget is already making a big impact through the programs and services it supports. “I am always very aware of the importance of keeping the line on taxation, while maintaining services for residents. I work closely with the RDEK staff to achieve this balance and this year, am very proud to see an overall decrease in the Electoral Area A residential tax rate,” explained RDEK Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski.

RDCK applies for grant to develop Flood Risk Evaluation Policy

The RDCK wants to study how to assess the risk and dangers of flooding and other hazards to local residents, and will apply for a grant to develop a Flood Risk Evaluation Policy. “Historic development in the RDCK has resulted in a number of communities being at risk to flooding and/or geohazards. With the impacts of climate change anticipated to increase the severity of events and vastly increase the frequency of those severe events, the residents of these communities are asking what can be done,” explains Chris Johnson, Manager of Community Sustainability, in a report to the RDCK board.

Two Peace region communities receiving emergency preparedness Funding

Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth.(Government of B.C.) VICTORIA, B.C. – The province has added another $7.5 million to the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF), meaning more funding for communities and local governments. Across the province, 48 communities will receive a share of $1.7 million through the Emergency Support Services (ESS) stream. This will target projects that use volunteer recruitment, retention and training, and the purchase of ESS equipment to build local emergence management. In the Peace Region, Taylor will receive $19,000 for Reception Centre Equipment and Training, and the Improvement and Modernization Project in West Moberly First Nations will receive $25,000.
