Shun dowry, lavish weddings: AIMPLB starts 11-point campaign | India News

NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has launched a nationwide campaign and come out with a 11-point “oath” calling upon community members to refrain from demanding dowry and keep the marriage ceremony simple without “needless rituals, customs and extravagant activities”. Calling it the “ikrarnama” (oath) the social reforms committee of AIMPLB wants this to be read out before the Friday prayers at mosques and sermons be held calling upon community members to take a vow to abide by these guidelines. All India convenor of social reform committee of AIMPLB, Muhammad Umrain Mahfooz Rahmani said that in Islam dowry is not allowed and incidents of extravagant marriages and cases of girls facing difficulties after marriages due to demand for dowry were worrying. “Hence we felt that these guidelines are necessary,” he added.
