Holland Township takes step forward in farm stand expansion

The farm briefly operated a farm stand at 461 Chicago Drive, but received a cease-and-desist letter from the township in May 2020. The planning commission suggested the farm appeal to the township board directly for an exemption to operate its farm stand, rather than changing township ordinance for a single property.  But that request was ultimately denied over legal concerns that, if an exception were made for Visser Farms, other third-party sellers could make similar requests. In September, the planning commission returned to the subject, and a subcommittee was created to draft possible language for an amendment.  Since then, the commission and township staff have explored ideas, shared concerns and listened to community input during a string of meetings.

Setting the record straight: Holland Township s farm stand controversy

Visser Farms briefly operated a farm stand at 461 Chicago Drive  just outside the city limits  last spring. In May, the township sent a cease-and-desist letter to the farm, saying it was in violation of zoning rules. Since then, the commission has been working on potential solutions. But misinformation on the subject is leading to frustration on both sides. Here is the corrected record: FALSE: The planning commission denied a special-use request for Visser Farms’ stand The planning commission hasn t denied a direct request to allow the farm stand on Chicago Drive. It s never been on the agenda.  In August 2020, attorney William Sikkel  on behalf of Visser Farms proposed the amendment to township ordinance. The commission suggested the farm appeal to the township board directly for temporary authorization to operate its farm stand, rather than changing township ordinance for a single property.

So far, costs are under budget, according to Henderson County Business and Community Development Director John Mitchell. Carl Taylor, Henderson County Public Schools chief administrative officer, updated the Board of Education on the progress of the project during its meeting Monday. Floors in the auxiliary gym have been painted and work continues there. Tile work in the locker rooms below the auxiliary gym is complete. The pedestrian bridge that connects the new building to the Stillwell Building has been built and concrete poured.
