Work has got underway to upgrade the facilities at Malton Station The £170,000 upgrade, which is being delivered by train company TransPennine Express (TPE), will see a brand new ticket office, waiting room and accessible unisex toilet installed at the Grade II listed station. Funding for the revamp has been made possible through TPE’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund, which supports projects that will benefit communities across the North of England and into Scotland, and a £5k funding contribution from Ryedale District Council as part of their infrastructure and connectivity improvement plan for Malton and Norton. The ticket office will be closed while work is taking place, but staff will still be on hand to provide support and assistance to customers.

FAMILIES returning to the Watercress Line this spring will be ‘chuffed’ to discover a brand new locomotive playground. The themed play area at Ropley Station will help the railway get back on track now the lockdown restrictions are lifted. The new attraction has been modelled on Southern Railway Schools Class Locomotive No 30925 Cheltenham. Youngsters can let off steam exploring the replica train, which features a tunnel, a slide, a fireman’s pole and lots to climb on. In the play area, there’s a basket swing and a climbing wagon for toddlers. Seating is provided on a luggage trolley! The playground has been funded with a £40,000 grant from South Western Railway’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund and £15,000 from the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Covid Recovery Fund.

Hopes funding will boost visitors to Herefordshire town

VISITORS arriving at Ledbury station will soon be able to learn more about the town s history thanks to a community grant from West Midlands Railway and the vision of local residents. A new project will see glazed information display cabinets installed at the site, featuring artistic maps of the town along with guides to Ledbury s history and heritage buildings. Artists from the local community have been commissioned to produce art and calligraphy for the display. The scheme is being led by the Rail & Bus for Herefordshire group with the support of Ledbury Town Council and Ledbury Civic Trust, with funding from the West Midlands Railway Your Community, Your Fund scheme.
