Although anecdotal evidence exists showing the lack of critical skills and resources in the dyeing sector, recent research undertaken by the England-based Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has found the true extent of the issue and the results suggests that the industry really is now at a crisis point.
An overwhelming majority of industry players that took part in the SDC’s recent survey, “An Industry in Crisis: The Widening of the Textile Dyeing Skills Gap” stated that there is an international shortage of knowledgeable textile coloration professionals, with more than three quarters of respondents describing this as harmful to textile production and quality of product.

The textile dyeing industry risks compromising on quality due to growing skills shortage and it is imperative to bring chemistry back into the dye house and make efforts to train and recruit talent that has a good foundation in the science behind the colouration of fabric.
In recent years, more and more industry representatives have been voicing their concerns to the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) about a widening skills gap. Hearsay and anecdotes were not enough so in December 2020 we carried out an in-depth study amongst our members and network globally to quantify the extent of the issue.

(IIT) Please tell us a little about yourself and the SDC.
(AF) First and foremost, I’m a chemist – having graduated from the University of Leeds, UK, many years ago with a degree in textile chemistry. I’ve had a career spanning several roles within the industry, gaining chartered colourist status and an ASDC level qualification along the way.
Currently, I’m responsible for the development of the training courses at the SDC internationally. The Society of Dyers and Colourists is the prominent training provider for textile dyeing globally, providing widely recognised and accredited qualifications in textile coloration chemistry.

HOLMFIRTH, England February 24, 2021 The textile dyeing industry is experiencing a global skills gap, now reaching crisis point, as younger people fail to enter the profession, according to a new survey from the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC).
Lack of knowledge is now harming textile production, and adding to coronavirus woes, agreed a majority of more than 100 respondents from 14 countries.
The SDC, the international dyeing and coloration membership organization and training provider, has highlighted growing concerns and a need for more, ongoing workplace education to counter these issues, as agreed by an overwhelming 87 percent.
Findings state that a third of global employers involved in dyeing and finishing are unable to recruit the talent that they need, with a further 55 percent of participants claiming that there is a lack of transferable scientific knowledge within the industry.
