LONDON, Jan 28 British car output fell to its lowest level since 1984 last year after the Covid-19 pandemic shut factories and hurt demand, an industry body said today, as a decision on keeping open the Vauxhall car factory looms.

Car production plunges to lowest level since 1984
Despite worst in a generation output, industry boss say Britain s automotive sector has not fallen below critical mass

Car production plunged to its lowest level since 1984 last year, with just 920,928 new vehicles made as coronavirus hammered the industry.
The total has only dipped below 1m once since then, in the wake of the financial crisis in 2009 when 999,460 cars were built.
The near-30pc drop in output last year meant sales worth £10.5bn were lost, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Chief executive Mike Hawes said: “This reflects the devastating impact of the pandemic on UK automotive production, with Covid lockdowns depressing demand, shuttering plants and threatening lives and livelihoods.”
