The full recovery of the new car industry “is still some way off” despite an increase in sales, according to a trade association.
Some 141,583 new cars were registered in the UK in April, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
That dwarfed the total of 4,321 recorded in the same month in 2020, when the country was in a full coronavirus lockdown.
But it is 12.9% lower than the April average between 2010 and 2019.

The SMMT said the full impact of dealerships being allowed to reopen in April after more than three months of closure is not fully reflected in the figures, as there is often a delay of several weeks between a customer visiting a showroom, deciding on a model and taking delivery of their new vehicle.

(Pocket-lint) - One-in-seven new UK cars is sold with a plug - as either a full electric (BEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The stat comes from new car industry stats released covering April 2021 trade as car showrooms re-opened.
The information released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that out of over 141,000 new car registrations in April, over 30,000 were full battery EVs, plug-in hybrids or hybrids - just under 22 percent of the market.

Car manufacturers have reportedly called on the government to delay the ban on the sales of new petrol diesel cars and vans at least until 2035.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps revealed that carmakers told him during a meeting recently that a ‘more realistic’ target would be five years later than the government’s announced ban.
Mr Shapps said: “Many of the manufacturers felt the Department for Transport needed to set an end date for the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines, with many suggesting a realistic phase-out could be 2035.
“Combined with incentives and tax support, they thought that such a deadline would help drive the acceleration of zero emission vehicles until the time when price parity is achieved with petrol models.
