Flyers warned not to put loose batteries in checked-in bags from January 1

Batteries will no longer be allowed in check-in luggage. Anyone flying through New Zealand airports in the new year are being reminded that from January 1, no loose or spare batteries will be allowed in passengers checked-in bags. The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA) says the restrictions are due to changes to the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations. The fears are that batteries can overheat and catch fire. The new rules allow up to 20 loose batteries of any type to be brought in carry-on baggage, and “must be protected by being in their original retail packaging, or an individual bag or protective pouch for each battery, or with tape placed over exposed terminals”.
