PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has become one of the signatories to the Convention on the International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation on Tuesday (March 16).
Speaking on the signing, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said as a signatory nation, Malaysia will contribute in making this convention the key to enhancing the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation. With Malaysia as a littoral state on the Straits of Melaka, we play a huge role in leading the way for modern navigation standards that are more secure and reliable for seafarers and international maritime, he said in a statement posted on Facebook.
KUALA LUMPUR (March 16): Malaysia today signed the Convention on the International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation.
The Ministry of Transport (MoT), in a statement tonight, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong signed the convention in a ceremony held in Putrajaya.
The ministry said the convention is a treaty instrument to transition the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authority (IALA), which is a non-governmental organisation (NGO), into and to be replaced by the International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation, which is an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO).
“This convention is key to advancing IALA’s role with regards to its core objective to enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation by contributing to the improvement and harmonisation of its international action,” the statement said.
Singapore 1st to ratify marine aids to navigation treaty
On 9 March 2021, Singapore ratified the Convention on the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation.

It is the first country to do so shortly after it signed the treaty on 1 March this year.
As explained, acceding to the convention will support the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) to become an intergovernmental organisation.
