Quentin Laurent, of Les Films de lâÅil sauvage, explains what drives him to making documentaries, and how he is dealing with it through the current situation.
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Quentin Laurent: Since childhood, I have nourished the vain and naive desire to discover the vast world. I studied human geography at university for five years and made a few research documentaries in sub-Saharan Africa. Geography literally means describe the earth , which also seems to be an acceptable definition of documentary cinema to me. This natural filiation in which my curiosity can blossom explains probably a bit why I do this job.

The organisers of the i-Represent International Documentary Film Festival (iREP) has announced the return of the documentary film festival which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
Preparations were already underway to mark the festival’s 10th anniversary before the coronavirus reared its ugly head.
In collaboration with Africa World Documentary Film Festival (AWDFF), the 2021 edition will be virtual, allowing a global audience to screen the 60 films including Femi Odugbemi’s documentary film ‘Unmasked: Leadership, Trust and the COVID-19 Pandemic in Nigeria’ selected from 26 countries in five continents.
In a joint statement, the organisers said that the world will be treated to “a feast of flicks that have been carefully curated to reflect the diversities of human experiences through themes that cut across social, cultural and political issues that affect the collective human family”.
Echoes of Ji.hlava extended to New York, Belgium, France
The Echoes of the 24th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival will kick off online this Thursday for audiences in the Czech Republic. Selected films will then be available also to viewers in Belgium, France and New York. This year’s Ji.hlava documentary spring will offer award-winning films, discussions with filmmakers and masterclasses. The Echoes are held in partnership with Czech Centers network.
“The global pandemic put a spoke in the wheels of the filmmaking world: cinemas remain closed, producers put off film shooting and many festivals have months-long delays. This is also why are launching our Echoes already in the springtime – we want to give documentary film fans and filmmakers a chance to connect”, says Ji.hlava IDFF director Marek Hovorka.
