EU provides EC$2.4 million in emergency funding to SVG Social Share THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU) has mobilized €£740,000 (EC$2.4 million) in emergency humanitarian aid to support those affected by the extremely damaging consequences of La Soufrière volcano´s protracted eruption in the small Caribbean island and developing state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Explosive eruptions started on the 9th of April, prompting the local government to order an immediate evacuation of the most directly exposed areas. The pyroclastic flows descending downhill and the approximately 10kmhigh ash column, whose falling debris have covered villages, damaged the country´s electricity grid and disrupted the water supply.

ROAMC: Experts in risk reduction in the Americas agree upon a plan of action regarding disaster preparation Format More than 300 people from Latin America and the Caribbean came together virtually to address the progress in disaster preparation in the region. The meeting took place within the framework of the workshop entitled “Enhanced Disaster preparedness for systemic risk in complex scenarios: challenges and opportunities”, between April 13th and 16th of 2021. Disaster preparation is especially important in Latin America and the Caribbean, where one in four of the world’s disasters takes place and where almost 300 million people have been affected by them in the last 20 years. The aims for improving preparation and strengthening resilience were challenged by the COVID19 pandemic, which drastically increased vulnerabilities and food insecurity.
