State-owned BSNL on Wednesday started satellite phone service through INMARSAT. It will be initially offered to government agencies and later opened for others citizen in phased manner.
The service will cover areas where no networks are present and be provided by INMARSAT which has 14 satellites. Agencies handling disasters, state police, railways, Border Security Force and other government agencies will be given the phones in the first phase, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said at the service launch.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK and the Permanent Representative to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO) Saida Muna Tasneem has been unanimously elected as the Vice-Chair of the 26th Assembly of IMSO for the biennial 2021-2022.
She was elected at the week-long Assembly held recently in London, said the High Commission on Monday.
The Assembly is the top policy-making body of the 106-member International Mobile Satellite Organisation, the only international organisation that oversees public satellite safety and security in maritime communication services provided by mobile satellite communication systems.

Saida Muna Tasneem is also a permanent representative of Bangladesh to the IMSO and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Iridium Communications has started offering its real-time maritime emergency service, the company announced Tuesday. The service, Iridium Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), commenced operation on Dec. 11th, marking the culmination of years of work for Iridium.
GMDSS is a safety of life system that helps rescue mariners in emergency situations while at sea. Iridium will now directly compete with
Inmarsat as one of only two companies authorized to provide GMDSS services. Until now, Inmarsat has been the only provider GMDSS-approved satellite communication services since the inception of GMDSS in 1999.
