Jones Act Supporters Want Accountability For Waivers - The Waterways Journal

May 21, 2021 By Jim Myers Washington, D.C. Major supporters of the Jones Act want  those seeking to benefit from a waiver of the 100-year-old maritime law to be held accountable by the government. To ensure that accountability as well as transparency, American Waterways Operators (AWO) President and CEO Jennifer Carpenter urged the Biden administration and Congress to apply the relevant provisions of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. American Maritime Partnership (AMP) President Mike Roberts “strenuously” encouraged such accountability to avoid undermining American jobs and consumers. Roberts said the Jones Act should not be waived unless it was to respond to an urgent national security need that cannot be met reasonably with American ships.

Nonetheless, the industry was still in its early days, and railroads were the primary method of transportation for goods from point of manufacture to point of sale.  Early history This did not deter brothers Carroll and Galen Roush, who founded Roadway Express in Akron, Ohio in 1930. Roadway Express entered the trucking industry as a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier; its first load was transporting tires between Akron and St. Louis. 

Police Unions Adopt Plan To Shift Stance On Protecting Bad Officers

By Ryan Shepard As the nation nears the one-year anniversary of George Floyd s death in Minneapolis, police unions are looking for ways to address active bystanders or officers who stand by while observing their colleagues act inappropriately. Led by the AFL-CIO, International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Service Employees International Union, a group of law enforcement has officials has approved a plan that demands more than 250,000 officers intervene when they see their colleague doing something wrong. The newly approved plan also calls on police unions to examine the actions of a union member before deciding whether or not to endorse them.
