Cape Cod firefighter remembered for dedication, public service

Cape Cod Times Daniel “Flippy” O’Connell’s life was one of public service. The Marine Corps veteran, firefighter, paramedic and cancer crusader died Feb. 27 just as the light of the full snow moon peaked.  He was 53.  He was a member of the dive team and honor guard, and was promoted to Dennis Fire Department lieutenant before his retirement in October 2019 due to the effects of occupational cancer. “He was a firefighter’s firefighter,” Dennis Fire Chief Mark Dellner said of O Connell, who was with the department for 23 years. “He was a true Jake,” Dellner said, using a term that signals respect for a firefighter in how they carry themselves, their leadership and command presence.

Little Falls Fire Chief Rob Parese helping Ilion Fire Department

Times Telegram Little Falls Fire Chief Rob Parese will be assisting the Ilion Fire Department on a part-time basis while the Ilion department is without a chief and another of its members due to an investigation. The arrangement, which the Little Falls Common Council approved during a meeting Tuesday, calls for Parese to devote eight hours each week to the Ilion department. “This is a shared services agreement with the village of Ilion,” said Little Falls Mayor Mark Blask. “This will have no effect on safety for our residents. He’ll go there certain days, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays for about three or four hours. This will be at most for about three months.”
