NASEM announces provisional committee for new study on life cycle analyses of low-carbon fuels

NASEM announces provisional committee for new study on life cycle analyses of low-carbon fuels Low carbon fuel standards, such as the Federal Renewable Fuel Standard and the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard, are major US programs for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation fuels. These standards rely on life cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool to estimate fuel GHG emissions. However, current LCAs differ notably in how they are implemented, with disagreements pertaining to data quality, modeling approaches, and key assumptions. The ad hoc NASEM committee will assess current methods for estimating lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with transportation fuels (liquid and non-liquid) for potential use in a national low-carbon fuels program. In carrying out its assessment, the committee will identify the general characteristics and capabilities of GHG emissions estimation methods that would be commonly needed across various types of low-carbon fue

The end of the road for plug-in hybrid vehicles ?

Motoring Editor It s only a little over ten years ago that plug-in hybrid cars became mainstream and car manufacturers have been promoting them heavily ever since. Now they appear to face an early demise under proposed draft EU legislation. When I received - and wrote about - a report last year from the international Transport and Environment group highlighting issues about the green credentials of plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV s), I was reminded of my experience of driving one of the most popular plug-in models, the Mitsubishi Outlander. The SUV, which is powered by a battery and a hefty 2.4 petrol engine, fell far short of the range the manufacturer claimed it could achieve on just the battery. Admittedly, it was a time of year when conditions demanded more battery use, but I was still surprised by how quickly the Outlander had to fall back on that very big engine. Something did not quite add up in terms of the car s green image.

Shell, BP, and Easyjet: The Big Polluters Designing the Rules for Voluntary Carbon Offsets

DeSmog Jan 22, 2021 @ 05:41 Many of the world’s most polluting companies are being handed a “get out of jail free” card by being invited to shape a scaled-up offsetting market, campaigners claim. The Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets is due to publish its “roadmap for implementation” on Wednesday, four months after it was launched by former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, who is now a UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance. Carney’s group wants to hugely scale up the existing market, making it “large, transparent, verifiable and robust”. This, it claims, will help private corporations meet the UK’s net zero target by 2050, in line with Paris Agreement targets to limit the worst impacts of climate change by restricting global warming to 1.5C or “well below” 2C.

Ocean conservation: EU leads the international effort to establish new Marine Protected Areas in Antarctica

EU Reporter Published 4 weeks ago Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius has hosted a ministerial meeting to build support among the members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) for the designation of new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean, in particular the EU proposals to establish MPAs in East Antarctica and in the Weddell Sea. The meeting was key in shaping a joint strategy to work together towards the adoption of new MPAs in CCAMLR and to present the Commission s actions under the European Green Deal that contribute to protecting the Antarctica. Speaking after the meeting, Commissioner Sinkevičius said: “Biodiversity loss and the climate crises are going faster than we had ever anticipated. It is critical to act now, if we are to turn the tide and conserve the rich and vulnerable marine life of the Southern Ocean. I am glad that we all expressed our commitment today in a joint
