The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits dropped by 13,000 last week to 553,000, the lowest level since the pandemic hit last March and another sign the economy is recovering from the coronavirus recession.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that jobless claims were down from 566,000 a week earlier. They have fallen sharply over the past year but remain well above the 230,000 weekly figure typical before the pandemic struck the economy in March 2020.

The DOL reported:
In the week ending April 24, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 553,000, a decrease of 13,000
from the previous week s revised level. The previous week s level was revised up by 19,000 from 547,000 to 566,000.
The 4-week moving average was 611,750, a decrease of 44,000 from the previous week s revised average. This is the
lowest level for this average since March 14, 2020 when it was 225,500. The previous week s average was revised up by
4,750 from 651,000 to 655,750.

During the week of April 18-24, a total of 215 initial weekly claims for state unemployment benefits were processed by the Department of Labor and Regulation. This is a decrease of 120 claims from the prior week’s total of 335.
The latest number of continued state claims is 2,934 for the week ending April 17, a decrease of 160 from the prior week’s total of 3,094. This indicates the number of unemployed workers eligible for and receiving benefits after their initial claim.
For the week ending April 24, a total of $613,000 was paid out in state benefits, in addition to $1 million in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), $120,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and $301,000 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits.

Claims for Unemployment Compensation, Week Ending April 24
AUGUSTA - For the week ending April 24, the Maine Department of Labor recorded about 1,700 initial claims filed for state unemployment insurance, and 150 initial claims filed for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA). In total, approximately 1,850 people were filing an initial claim or reopening their unemployment claim.
About 13,700 weekly certifications, or continued claims, were filed last week for state unemployment, with another 13,000 weekly certifications filed under PUA. In addition, about 17,200 weekly certifications were filed for the federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. Weekly certifications must be filed by claimants every week in order to continue to receive unemployment benefits.
