New Michigan unemployment claims decline for 4th straight week

New unemployment claims in Michigan continued their slow decline last week, dropping for the fourth straight week as COVID-19 cases decrease in the state and many restrictions have been lifted. New claims in Michigan declined to an estimated 16,647 in the week ending Jan. 30, a drop from 18,446 the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. Last year at this time, there were nearly 7,000 new claims. Michigan s claims were estimated for the week ending Jan. 30 because the state s labor department was unable to generate a final report  due to the processing constraints experienced with all of the new and reopened claims, Jason Moon, a spokesperson for the department said.
