DENVER â Some Coloradans who have desperately been waiting for federal extended unemployment benefits to come online in the state will start seeing some relief this weekend and early next week, the state department of labor and employment said Thursday.
Cher Haavind, the deputy executive director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, said the department was emailing around 230,000 people starting on Thursday who might be eligible to reopen their federal claims to begin the process.

Initial jobless claims in regular state programs fell by 67,000 to 847,000 in the week ended Jan. 23, Labor Department data showed Thursday. On an unadjusted basis, initial jobless claims dropped to 873,966.
Continuing claims – an estimate of the number of Americans filing for ongoing unemployment benefits – dropped by 203,000 to 4.77 million in the week ended Jan. 16. Bloomberg’s survey of economists had called for 875,000 initial claims and 5.09 million continuing claims.
If negotiations had been completed earlier and the bill passed sooner, there would have been less of a delay in getting the benefits to workers, Robinson said.
Michele Evermore, senior policy analyst of the Washington, D.C., nonprofit National Employment Law Project, said she was getting calls from state unemployment agencies representatives on Christmas Eve, looking for her help in deciphering the bill language, which wasn t released until Dec. 21.

Still, the extent of the delays with implementation seen in Michigan and in states around the country have left unemployment experts scratching their heads.

Claimants who collected UI benefits last year need the 1099-G tax form from IDES to complete state and federal tax returns. The form is necessary for individuals who received state or federal UI benefits.
This includes claimants who received regular UI benefits and/or benefits under the new federal pandemic relief programs, including Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), Lost Wages Assistance (LWA), and state Extended Benefits (EB).
