A $900 billion COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress on Monday could extend some unemployment benefits, provided it’s signed by the president, the state labor office said Wednesday.
“We are relieved that Congress has acted to continue to provide unemployment insurance benefits and assistance to claimants as our Hawaii ohana continues to struggle from the effects of COVID-19 on our community,” Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Director Anne Perreira-Eustaquio said in a news release.
Perreira-Eustaquio said that before the benefits can be extended, certain steps need to be taken, including getting guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor, allotting funding and making changes to IT programming.
