Seafaring unions quash employers wage-cut plan

AS negotiations to set the global minimum wage for seafarers drew to a conclusion, the shipowners made a shocking suggestion.  This is the moment, they announced, to disregard the International Labour Organisation (ILO) mechanism and cut the real value of the ILO minimum wage, currently set at $21.36 (£15.35) a day. At almost the same time, AP Moller-Maersk, the container shipping giant that carries approximately one-fifth of global exports, issued a dramatic update of its own.  The company predicted that its earnings this year would be $9 to $11 billion, nearly double previous estimates. Its shares climbed by 3 per cent on the news that day.

It’s almost hard to believe that in the middle of a pandemic during which global supply chains have proved more or less robust, international commerce was almost brought to its knees last week when the Suez Canal was blocked for a period of six days after a single ship ran aground.  Maritime data company Lloyd’s List estimates the incident held up an estimated $9.6 billion (€8.15 billion) worth of cargo each day between Asia and Europe.
