Legislation that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters asserts will make collective bargaining more fair at
XPO Logistics (NYSE: XPO) and other trucking companies has the potential to gain traction in the current Congress – and it has the full support of President Joe Biden.
The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act was introduced in February and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said he plans to take it up for consideration next week. The bill was approved by the House when it was introduced a year ago, but then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., vowed not to bring it to the Senate floor for a vote, and President Trump said he would veto it.

Uber India said that it was doubling down to provide drivers on its platform improved earnings, as several drivers across the country have been staging protests against the company, and its rival Ola’s policies. “As cities open up and Uber’s markets recover across India, Uber is doubling down to provide drivers on its platform improved earnings and optimum utilization of their time, resulting in greater financial independence and the economic revival of communities,” the company said in a press statement on Monday.
However, both Ola and Uber drivers have said that their income from driving these cabs has significantly gone down, and complained that they receive very little help from the two companies. In fact, drivers staged a protest against Ola and Uber in Hyderabad, and Delhi, calling on the government to fix fares charged by Ola, and Uber.

IMO: Pacific Hub Ports Concept Explored For Regional Crew Change And Repatriation

The concept of “hub” ports to receive, quarantine, test for COVID-19 and potentially vaccinate seafarers in the Pacific region was explored at a recent roundtable meeting (25 February) involving representatives from States in the region, UN agencies, the shipping industry, the relevant trade union organization and the Pacific Islands Forum.
Seafarers from Pacific island States have faced circuitous and lengthy journeys to return home when this has been arranged, illustrating the complexities of the crew change crisis.

My father, Brian Laughton, who has died aged 86, was a campaigner for the rights of shipping workers and was central in the international trade union fight against so-called “flags of convenience”, used by some owners as a means to circumvent labour standards. He was also a lifelong cycling enthusiast.
Born in London to Amy Laughton (nee Forder), a dinner lady, and her husband, Alfred, an electrician, Brian and his siblings, Graham and Cynthia, were evacuees during the war, spending time in Cumbria and Yorkshire. His father – also an enthusiastic cyclist – died when Brian was only nine years old.
