As the director of the International Program department at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Jay Levenson leads a team that connects the museum to an international network of artists, scholars, and institutions. In 2009, his team launched Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP), a research and exchange initiative devoted to art in a global context with a current focus on Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America. What is the role of the International Program department at MoMA, and how has the department changed since you first joined in 1996? The International Program at MoMA was founded in 1952 as the department that would organize international traveling exhibitions, as part of the museum’s new outreach efforts. The International Council, a donors group begun the following year, provides independent support for the department.
