Balance to be struck to protect domestic industries in trade deals | Harwich and Manningtree Standard

Environment Secretary George Eustice has said the Government wants to do trade deals with other countries “but obviously on the right terms” amid reports of a rift in the Cabinet over negotiations with Australia. The Financial Times reported that Mr Eustice and Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove were at loggerheads with International Trade Secretary Liz Truss and Brexit minister Lord Frost over granting tariff-free access to Australian farmers under any proposed deal. Ms Truss is understood to be under pressure to grant tariff-free access for farmers in Australia and New Zealand in order to secure the new trade deals, but Mr Eustice is concerned that doing so could spark a backlash from the UK farming industry due to the impact of potential zero-tariff imports of lamb and beef.

Farmers fear prospect of tariff-free trade deal with Australia

Farmers fear prospect of tariff-free trade deal with Australia THREAT: Unfettered trade with Australia would undermine the viability of Scottish farming. Scottish beef and lamb production could be decimated and the rural economy severely impacted if a tariff-free trade deal is signed with Australia, the UK’s farmers’ unions have said. Cabinet ministers are expected to discuss a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Australia later this week, with an ambition of shaking hands on a deal at the G7 summit in Cornwall next month. However Ministers are reportedly split over the negotiations, and it is understood Environment Secretary George Eustice is at loggerheads with International Trade Secretary Liz Truss over granting tariff-free access to Australian farmers under any proposed deal.
