Smoky Hill Museum new exhibit takes a look back at the history of Salina downtown development
Opening April 30, visitors to the Smoky Hill Museum will have the chance to learn - or re-live - the history of the downtown area through the new Crossroads exhibit.
The Crossroads explores how Salina was built with the intersection of Santa Fe and Iron Avenues at its center, and the city s birth, growth, and change.
Museum Director Susan Hawksworth, describes the downtown area as the heart of Salina, where the city saw its first framed structure home and businesses.
Jeff Lane of Treanor HL presented the schematic to the commission during its meeting Tuesday morning.
The site proposed for the facility, near the intersection of N. Front Street and E. Pacific Avenue, is close to 18 acres and will allow for the jail, sheriff s office and parking with additional space available for expansion if necessary.
Processes with the city of Salina are underway for the site to allow construction to begin. We hope to receive some city comments here in the next week or so, Lane said.
Lane said his team has met with a development review team for the city to go over the plans for the facility and that meetings will continue as the project progresses.
Tony s Pizza Events Center will get a new portable court after approval Monday by the Salina City Commission.
The court will replace the main portable basketball and volleyball court that was purchased in 1991 that was designed to be taken up and down two or three times a year but TPEC has seen years where the floor was taken up an placed down as many as 15 times.
The new floor will come from Connor Sports Flooring and will cost just under $110,000. There was a lower bid from Horner Sports Flooring for a used court but it was only $2,319 less than the Connor court.
