Share A former Bath sheriff’s deputy arrested for domestic violence assault in 2019 has agreed to a deal that would dismiss the charge in 18 months if he follows the terms of the agreement. Matthew Shiers, 37, of Bath, was arrested in June 2019 by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office after he was accused of strangling his live-in girlfriend during an argument at his home in West Bath. He was employed as a deputy with the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office at the time.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a fight at Granite Ledge Road shortly before 9 p.m. Chief Deputy Brett Strout said people were trying to get James Murphy, 41, to leave a residence. Murphy allegedly left in a Chevy Malibu that did not belong to him. “Witnesses saw Murphy driving and while he was driving, he rammed a truck,” Strout said. The driver of the pickup truck wasn’t injured, Strout said. A 43-year-old passenger the owner of the Malibu suffered a head injury but was not hospitalized, Strout said.

File photo Following a thorough investigation by Officer Scott Getchell, Evelyn Underwood, 24, of Bath was charged April 3 with Operating Under the Influence, Driving to Endanger and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. According to the investigation, Underwood had a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit to be driving. Underwood is set to be arraigned in court at 1 p.m. July 29. The evening of Feb. 10, Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a head-on collision on Bath Road in front of Wiscasset Ford. Wiscasset Police, Fire and EMS responded.
