An investigation into potential animal abuse began when Michigan Humane Detroit contacted law enforcement in Saginaw County several months ago, said Bonnie Kanicki, director of Saginaw County Animal Care and Control. Carrollton Township police and Animal Control officers began a joint investigation, Kanicki said. Carrollton Township Police Chief Craig A. Oatten said that while officers were watching the house in question, they didn’t have the ability to get a search warrant.

Singleton Jr., 27, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, appeared before Saginaw County Chief Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson and pleaded no contest to single count of voluntary manslaughter, carrying a concealed weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm, plus two counts of felony firearm. By pleading no contest as opposed to guilty, Singleton did not orally admit to having committed any crimes. Jackson had to rely on other documentation to enter convictions on the record.

The former is punishable by up to two years in prison, while the latter is a 10-year felony.
