Hate crime numbers are increasing nationwide, according to new numbers from the U.S. Department of Justice obtained this week by KCRA 3. Hate crimes . have always been a topic of concern, said FBI Sacramento Special Agent Sean Reagan. The trends have shown an increase over the last five years. Between 2015 and 2019, reported hate crimes increased 25%, and 60% of those were racially motivated, according to FBI reports. I think people are reporting more frequently now, but we all need to encourage members of the community to continue to report, said Reagan, adding he believes there are many more crimes that go unreported. Both Reagan s office and the Sacramento County ADA acknowledged there are challenges to prosecuting hate crimes. Between 2000 and 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice investigated 1,864 suspects for federal hate crimes. U.S. attorneys convicted only 284.
