Jan. 27 An extreme atmospheric river storm that reached Northern California on Tuesday evening brought extreme wind gusts overnight and is continuing to wreak havoc Wednesday morning in the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada.

Sacramento begins cleaning up
Fierce, howling southerly winds knocked out power for tens of thousands in the valley, many of whom remain without power. The gusts toppled trees, and the mix of high winds with a half-inch and an inch of rain near the capital contributed to numerous traffic incidents on Sacramento-area highways. Downed power lines and trees also forced extended roadway closures, many of them overnight.

Jan. 27 A menacing and massive winter storm, fueled by an “atmospheric river” from the north Pacific Ocean, has reached the Sacramento region on Tuesday night.
The extreme storm is bringing heavy winds, near-freezing rain and dangerous driving conditions to the Valley floor; even at low elevations, snow is falling in several areas in Northern California.

Power outages reported across Sacramento region, SMUD says
The storm, as advertised, has made its presence felt across the capital region Tuesday evening. Just after 11 p.m. about 76,000 customers of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District were without power, mostly due to power lines being knocked down by tree branches or the wind. A number of outages were being sparked by blowing transformers as well, according to the utility.

Officials have lifted the evacuation for a portion of the LNU burn scar in Solano County. The Solano County sheriff’s office says residents should still remain vigilant and have a go-bag ready in case of another bad storm.
5:25 p.m.
Interstate 80 remains closed from Colfax to the Nevada State line due to spinouts. Eastbound traffic is being during around at the Colfax exit due to the dangerous conditions. Some vehicles pulled over to the side of the road to wait out the closure, but Caltrans has no estimated time of reopening.
