SAN JOSE, Calif. - A former manager of the Permanente Cement Plant and Quarry near Cupertino has been sentenced to a year in county jail following his conviction last year in a bribery scheme that involved more than $100,000 in kickbacks and a luxury trip to Italy. The Santa Clara County District Attorney s Office announced the sentencing Monday for Juan Pedro Yanez, 40, who was convicted last year of conspiracy to defraud and 11 counts of commercial bribery. Yanez received over $50,000 in bribes in 2015-2016 from Robert Segura Jr., a preferred contractor. In turn, Mr. Segura and his companies received over $6 million in work during that same period from the plant.

(KTVU) - A 32-year-old man has been formally charged with a hate crime following the alleged sexual assault of an Asian woman at a San Jose Caltrain station earlier this week.  The Santa Clara County District Attorney s Office said the suspect, Johan Strydom, grabbed the woman by the neck at the Diridon train station, pulled her to the ground, and tossed her from side to side by her hair.  During the incident, Strydom told the woman, F- you Asians, the district attorney s office said, adding he intended to rape her.

The Stop AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Hate rally is hosted by Assemblyman Evan Low, D-Campbell, and San Jose City Councilmember Pam Foley. At 11 a.m. Saturday, local leaders including State Sen. Dave Cortese, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Santa Clara County supervisors Joe Simitian and Susan Ellenberg will join the rally at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda.
