Before the festivities of Independence Day begin the city of Santa Clarita is reminding residents that fireworks are illegal to use and possess within the community. Mayor Bill Miranda was joined by City Councilmembers, Supervisor Kathryn Barger, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Grossman Burn Center this morning for a fireworks press conference to reinforce this message. The conference was concluded with a pyrotechnic demonstration to showcase the potentially costly dangers that result from fireworks. Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, residents are cautioned against using fireworks and encouraged to report any illegal firework use near them at santa-clarita.com/RSC. Reported Santa Clarita Drug, Alcohol Arrests Nearly Double Over Weekend

Five of the felony charges included multiple suspects arrested for an attempted armed robbery in Castaic.  A containment had been set up Friday afternoon after five people allegedly attempted to rob a victim at gunpoint. At around 12:30 p.m., deputies received reports of a possible armed robbery on the 27000 block of Quincy St. near Hasley Canyon Rd. in Castaic, said Lt. Ethan Marquez, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “We are investigating five male hispanics for robbery,” Marquez said at the time. “They were apparently armed with a firearm.” According to Sheriff’s officials, all five suspects were taken into custody. No injuries were reported and no property was obtained by the suspects.

A brush fire quickly spread near Towsley Canyon on Tuesday afternoon, with initial reports indicating it had grown by 50 acres within a half-hour. The call was received by the first responders at 1:27 p.m. on the 24000 block of The Old Road. “We received a report of flames and smoke coming from an area near Towsley Canyon Park,” said Leslie Lua, a spokeswoman for the Fire Department, at 1:35 p.m. At 2 p.m., officials on the scene gave their initial report that the fire was 50 acres in size, in medium-to-heavy brush, and was being spread by 30 mph northeast winds, according to Chris Thomas, a spokesman for the Fire Department.
