Brush fire burns 10 acres in Newhall

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - A brush fire in Newhall grew to about 10 acres before firefighters took it down on Thursday.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call of the Weldon Fire near the 5 Freeway in Newhall around 6 p.m.
No structures were threatened, according to the City News Service.

Canyon Country Assault Suspect In Custody After Hitting Stepson
A Canyon Country assault suspect was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly hit his stepson during a verbal altercation.
On Tuesday around 4 p.m., deputies responded to the 19100 block of Nadal Street in Canyon Country regarding a family disturbance call, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Upon arrival, deputies learned the suspect was involved in a verbal altercation with his wife, Arriaga said.
During the verbal argument, the suspect’s stepson attempted to intervene to which the suspect then began to physically assault the victim, according to Arriaga.
Deputies then located Sears on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and proceeded to arrest him on that warrant.
Sears was transported to and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, where his bail was set at $35,000.

A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy and a hit-and-run suspect suffered minor injuries following a deputy-involved fight in Newhall Thursday morning.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to a medical emergency call from the Sheriff’s Station around 9 a.m. near Powell Drive and Wiley Canyon Road, according to Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Matheny.
“We went out and assisted our partners in the Sheriff’s (Department) in a deputy-involved incident,” he said. “We had one patient on that call, a sheriff’s deputy.”
Matheny said the deputy’s extent of injuries appeared to be minor and that the deputy was OK.
Suspect Detained After Newhall Deputy-Involved Fight, Minor Injuries Reported
A suspect was detained Thursday morning after a Newhall deputy-involved fight which resulted in injuries to the suspect and a deputy, officials said.
Around 8:50 a.m. Thursday, deputies contacted a hit-and-run suspect they were searching for near Wiley Canyon Road and Powell Drive in Newhall, said Natalie Arriaga spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
When deputies made contact with the suspect a fight broke out between them, according to officials.
Deputies on scene requested immediate back up to the scene to help detain the suspect who was allegedly fighting deputies, according to officials.
