Multiple Fires Spark In Santa Cruz County, Prompting Evacuations

Cal Fire CZU Firefighters responded to multiple fires in Santa Cruz County Tuesday after high winds amid dry conditions. Two of the fires prompted evacuations. Those orders were lifted Wednesday. This article is no longer being updated as of Wednesday, January 20 at 3:30 p.m. UPDATE Wednesday 1/20/21 2:30 PM: According to Cal Fire, most if not all of the 18 fires that broke out in Santa Cruz County on Tuesday should be contained by this evening. The fires broke out after high winds and dry conditions.  No homes were lost and evacuation orders have been lifted for the Freedom Fire and Panther Ridge Fire.

The 18-year-old was speeding east at around 6:15 p.m. on Summit Road near Timmus Lane when he lost control of his 1968 Chevrolet and struck a tree, according to the CHP. After hitting the tree, the Chevrolet continued up a private driveway and hit a metal gate and wooden fence.

Soquel Drive has been closed between Chanticleer Avenue and Winkle Avenue while the investigation continues. The Sheriff s Office said one person has been taken to an out-of-county hospital. A sheriff’s spokesman said the man was shot while on the sidewalk but could not provide any other information.

(Renee Schiavone/Patch) SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA Two suspects were arrested this week after the Santa Cruz County Sheriff s Office found a highly flammable hash oil lab with cannabis concentrate estimated to be worth more than $2 million at a rural marijuana grow in Boulder Creek. Christopher Akers, 34, of Oregon, and Michael Akers, 43, of Washington, were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail after the lab was discovered on Tuesday. The lab was found after the sheriff s office served a search warrant in the 600 block of Hartman Creek Road in Boulder Creek as part of an investigation into a possible unlicensed indoor cannabis cultivation operation.

Schroeder was last seen wearing olive green pants, a grey windbreaker, and a red hat. Deputies said they believe he was headed to the Watsonville area and could still be there. Anyone with information is asked to call police dispatch at 831-471-1121.
