Aside from the horrifying lead item in this week’s Best of Bill column, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis dominated the Top 5. It’s the first time in months that’s happened, but it reflects the pivotal period our community has entered with the frenzy of activity and expectations surrounding the vaccines.
In addition to our regular coverage of the coronavirus, Noozhawk managing editor Giana Magnoli has been asking readers to send in their specific vaccine questions, and she and her team have been diligently answering them.
They’ve been doing that for more than two months, and it’s been an extremely popular and valuable service. I’d call it solutions journalism at its most basic form.

Jo Carol (Zellers) Murphy passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on Jan. 16 at Felicita Vida, Senior Community in Escondido, California.
Jo Carol was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 3, 1945, and moved to Santa Barbara when she was a child. She attended Mount Carmel Elementary School and Bishop Garcia Diego High School.
She married Tom Murphy and they raised three children: John, Lisa and Kimberly.

Jo Carol was a working mother, who always put her family first. She delighted in spending the holidays with family, while enjoying good food and traditions.

The Santa Barbara Unified School District has hired a Sacramento public relations company to help with reputation management, communications and district leadership.
The district’s $50,000 contract with Nichols Strategies LLC runs from January to June.

Regarding the Jan. 22 article, “Beachside Bar-Café in Goleta Becomes Latest Business Casualty of COVID-19 Pandemic,” it’s gratifying to see such an outpouring of love for owner Dave Hardy.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Dave since our oldest sons played soccer in the 1980s, and have long trusted his wise counsel and advice. He is a great business leader who spent his entire career in the restaurant business.
