Central Coast Democratic Congressman Salud Carbajal announced new gun safety legislation that provides federal grants and resources to states that follow California’s lead in implementing red-flag laws.
His bill is called the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2021.
Carbajal introduced the legislation at a press conference May 25, closely following the 7th anniversary of the 2014 Isla Vista shooting where six people were killed and 14 others were injured.
California passed a red-flag law following the shooting.
Red-flag laws allow family members and law enforcement officials to petition a judge to prevent an individual in crisis from purchasing a firearm. It can also temporarily remove firearms from that individual.

Charges have been filed against the man police say sparked a fire in Santa Barbara last week that forced evacuations, damaged at least one home and threatened several others.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorneyâs office on Tuesday announced the charges against Victor Angel Hernandez, 23, of Santa Barbara
The charges include three felony and two misdemeanor counts, including arson of an inhabited structure, attempted arson and reckless burning, which the DAâs Office says are related to various incidents that took place in and around the Loma Alta Drive area.

He was arrested and booked into the County Jail on suspicion of arson, where he remained in custody Tuesday with bail set at $2 million.
He was charged Tuesday with five criminal counts, including two counts of felony arson of an inhabited structure or property on Via Del Cielo and on Loma Alta Drive, and a felony count of attempt to burn for allegedly attempting to set a fire and burn a structure in the area of McKinley Elementary School.
He also faces a special allegation for causing multiple structures to burn, according to the criminal complaint.

Authorities eradicated nearly 8,000 cannabis plants and destroyed more than 300 pounds of illegal processed cannabis flower at an illegal cannabis cultivation site east of Santa Maria last month.
The parcel, in the 1400 block of Tepusquet Road, sits in an environmentally sensitive area that is home to native plants, fish and wildlife species.
