The dynamic novel coronavirus took center stage this year, and Noozhawk coverage of the pandemic captured readers’ attention.
The list of most-read stories of the year was dominated by stories on the pandemic, public health response, and widespread business and school closures in Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department on Friday announced the first pediatric death related to COVID-19, as well as 186 new cases of the disease.

In a statement condemning Floyd’s death, Luhnow acknowledged law enforcement’s contribution to the marginalization of disadvantaged groups.
“It is the responsibility of current law enforcement leaders to take measures to prevent those actions from occurring,” she wrote.
“We are first peace officers. That comes with the understanding that we are part of the community, not separate of it,” Luhnow said at one of the protests, announcing that the department is “committed to the development of a citizen review process.”
During her time at SBPD, Luhnow created new officer recruitment strategies to address staffing concerns at the department, according to the city.
There were 75 confirmed COVID-19 patients being treated in local hospitals, including 21 people in ICU beds.
Of Monday’s new COVID-19 cases, Santa Maria tallied 136, Santa Barbara had 68, and Lompoc had 35. The rest were spread throughout the county.
Seven new COVID-19 cases were from the Lompoc federal correctional complex, where few cases have been reported since the large inmate outbreaks in the spring.
“We have reached case counts that exceed all previous records,” Do-Reynoso said. “It is imperative that each individual take action now and stay home.
“We are reaching a point where we can see on the horizon our health care system being overrun,” she continued. “We must take immediate action as our decisions are now seeing the price to be paid, and it is costing the lives and wellbeing of our community members.”
