A natural gas leak at a Santee shopping center forced authorities to close a parking lot Monday afternoon.
The gas began to spew when a construction crew ruptured a gas line about 2:25 p.m. in the parking lot of Santee Trolley Square, near a Chili’s Grill & Bar, on Mission Gorge Road near Cuyamaca Street, Santee fire Chief John Garlow said.
Patrons and employees at the Chili’s were asked to shelter in place until San Diego Gas & Electric crews shut off the gas line. Garlow said SG&E crews shut off power in addition to gas service to some businesses because the broken line was near a transformer.

A busy Santee intersection was shut down Wednesday evening as authorities cleaned up chemicals that spilled in a non-injury crash, sheriff’s officials said.
The multiple-vehicle collision occurred around 3:45 p.m. at Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street, according to sheriff’s officials.
@SDSOSantee Total road closure on Mission Gorge Rd between Cuyamaca St & Town Center Pkwy @CityofSantee while chemical spill is cleaned up. Closure expected to last up to 3 hours long. SigAlert has been broadcasted. San Diego Sheriff (@SDSheriff) December 31, 2020
While no injuries were reported, one of the involved vehicles was apparently a work truck that spilled bottles of chlorine, according to sheriff’s Lt. Pat McEvoy. Emergency crews were working to clean up the spilled chemicals before they reached the storm drain.
