Iceland gull makes extremely rare visit to Florida

Feb. 24 (UPI) Wildlife researchers in Florida said an annual bird survey led to the discovery of a highly unusual visitor to the state: an Iceland gull.
The Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation said staff members and volunteers participated in the 13th Annual Florida Winter Shorebird Survey, and while snapping photos of birds on the East End of Sanibel Island researchers noticed an all-white gull.

The researchers snapped a few photos of the bird before moving on to help an injured pelican nearby, but a later review of the pictures determined the white bird was an Iceland gull.

While it looks like there are fewer spots of red tide dotting our coast, the effects of it can last much longer by taking a toll on wildlife.
The CROW Clinic on Sanibel Island has admitted nearly 100 royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) as patients so far this year.
Of those birds, 66 have signs of red tide poisoning, showing how algal blooms can disrupt the food web.
So, it’s a welcome sight when the CROW Clinic releases an animal back into the wild.

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation recently unveiled a new refreshed look and logo.
“The iconic SCCF logo served the organization well for 53 years,” Chief Executive Officer Ryan Orgera said. “Our new logo acknowledges how we have evolved from our founding focus on land to our expanded focus on coastal ecosystems today.”
The SCCF has been engaged in the development of a new logo one that represents who and what it is today for the past year. The new logo is based on three elements and inspired by the work it does to protect land, water and wildlife.

Doug and Leah Beck
During the last 30 years, the Florida chicken turtle has been rare on Sanibel, with only four verified sightings between the 1980s and 2019. But that changed recently when Doug and Leah Beck, who are major supporters of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s terrestrial and freshwater turtle research, alerted herpetologist and Director of Wildlife & Habitat Management Chris Lechowicz to a strange-looking turtle crossing the street near their home.
He was excited to inform them it was in fact a pregnant female Florida chicken turtle. She was radiographed by the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, which showed seven eggs, and was outfitted with a radio transmitter.
