After-school beachcombing students explore the beach and learn more about common items that wash ashore on Sanibel.
Throughout January, Sanibel Sea School educators offered after-school beachcombing each Tuesday. The session was designed to be a hands-on, after-school activity to get outside and explore nature.
Students used their powers of observation to compare and contrast shorelines on the bay and Gulf.
“On our way to the beach we honed our observation skills by playing games to notice less conspicuous things in nature,” Marine Science Educator Brianna Machuga said. “Then my students were able to notice subtle differences in the shorelines, such as larger shells on the Gulf side of the island.”

The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society received a grant from Florida Power and Light and Audubon Florida to enhance migratory and resident bird habitat and forage in Pond Apple Park. It partnered with city’s Natural Resources Department and Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation on the project.
A total of 270 native plants, selected from the Audubon Native Plant list and purchased from the SCCF Native Plant Nursery, were planted under a canopy of native trees that lacked understory vegetation. The plants included a variety of native shrubs and groundcovers that produce berries or host insects that are important to bird diets.
CEPD provides update on planning for nourishment project
By CEPD - | Feb 9, 2021
In its winter newsletter released to the public last week, the Captiva Erosion Prevention District reported that planning for the 2021-22 beach nourishment project is well under way.
The CEPD has been working closely with its engineering firm, economists and the local wildlife commissions. To keep the cost of the periodic nourishment as low as possible, it will consider a project start period within the next 12 months when considering the bids from contractors. Once the project begins, construction will take place for approximately four to six months until completion. Public bidding for a contractor will take place by mid-April. Once a contractor is selected, the project timeline will be solidified by May or June.
