U.S. Army North has ordered 80 military personnel to help hospitals in Abilene, Lufkin and Eagle Pass in the nation’s ongoing battle against coronavirus.
Acting at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the command based at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston has conducted similar missions across the country over the past several months, including in California, New Mexico, Arizona, Wisconsin and North Dakota.

Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio said Tuesday it’s suspending elective surgeries as worsening conditions trigger restrictions for civilian medical facilities under orders issued by Gov. Greg Abbott.
BAMC said it would temporarily delay some elective surgeries, particularly those requiring an overnight stay.
“These are non-life-threatening surgeries,” BAMC spokesman Bob Whetstone said. “If somebody has to have a bypass, that’s going to happen.”
