Someone San Diego Should Know: Steve Slocum

Print Exploring new cultures will not only provide valuable experiences but will also dispel our unconscious preconceptions about people and foster an open mind. When Steve Slocum and his family lived in Kazakhstan for five years, they learned the Kazakh language and allowed themselves to be absorbed into a hospitable culture. “The culture was a fascinating mixture of Islam and indigenous customs. It didn’t take us long to fall in love with the Kazakh people,” Slocum said. Though he and his family went as missionaries, “as I unconsciously and consciously compared my culture, and the outworking of the Christian faith in it, to the culture of the Kazakh people, seeds were planted for new ways of thinking,” said Slocum, who now lives in Pacific Beach.

The transition from Trump to Biden is already being felt in San Diego

It’s only been a few days, and already the official transition of power in Washington, D.C., has touched San Diego in concrete ways. A flurry of executive orders from President Joe Biden’s first 24 hours in office has halted construction on border wall projects, pledged further protection for the county’s 27,000 DACA recipients, and frozen deportation orders for an unknown number of local migrants. For the record: 3:22 PM, Jan. 24, 2021A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the length of time that U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer has served in office. Dr. Kimberly Berens runs a system of private schools based on what she calls the science of learning and hopes the pandemic spurs change in the entire education system. I always say from a breakdown comes a breakthrough, Dr. Berens said.

Parent Institute for Quality Education Celebrates its 30th Anniversary |

By Mario A. Cortez What started out as two community leaders tackling low academic performance at Sherman Elementary here in San Diego has evolved into a statewide program that has fostered student success and engaged parents in the education of their children. This Friday, Dec. 1, the Parent Institute for Quality Education, known as PIQE, will celebrate 30 years of family empowerment and student achievement with a special ceremony at Sherman Elementary. PIQE began in October of 1987 after Alberto Ochoa and Vahac Mardirosian began to feel concern over low academic performance among San Diego’s Latino students, especially those at Sherman Elementary.
