Schools have played a key role in providing resources and support to families beyond the needs of students since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March. But what if we took that one step further and developed schools as community centers, providing resources and supports to neighborhood families from food to wellness checks?
Last May, a survey of education leaders conducted by our in-house research team found 85% of district administrators were most concerned about community health and wellness as they return to school. College Fix readers may recognize the name of President Biden’s nominee for deputy secretary of education, Cindy Marten.
As superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District, she forced teachers to go through “white privilege” training that literally told the white instructors “You are racist” and “You are upholding racist ideas, structures and policies.”
According to a person who attended a later training and took notes and screenshots – recording wasn’t allowed – the speaker, University of Georgia Prof. Bettina Love, went into her stock spiel about “spirit murder.”

A man was detained Wednesday morning after he was seen carrying what looked like a long rifle on Standley Middle School grounds in University City during an on-campus food distribution, San Diego police said.
Police recovered what turned out to be a pellet gun.
The man was spotted walking across an athletic field at the school on Radcliffe Drive, south of Governor Drive, about 11 a.m., police Officer Scott Lockwood said.
While the school is closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, preparations for a food distribution were underway. The campus and 76 other San Diego Unified School District schools host food distributions for children between noon and 2 p.m. on weekdays, according to the district’s website.
