It s official: San Diego Unified superintendent to become U S deputy education secretary

Print Cindy Marten, superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District, will be the nation’s next deputy education secretary. The U.S. Senate voted 54-44 on Tuesday to confirm Marten for the position. Six Republicans voted yes to confirm her: Sens. Roy Blunt of Missouri, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rob Portman of Ohio. It has been almost four months since President Joe Biden’s team announced her nomination. Marten, 54, has served as superintendent for eight years, as principal for 10 years and as a classroom teacher for 17 years. Biden’s team cited her past work as principal of Central Elementary School in City Heights and San Diego Unified’s above-average graduation rates and growth in reading test scores as reasons for nominating her.

San Diego Unified released a statement following the confirmation saying Marten will prepare to transition from the San Diego Unified School District to Washington, D.C.. to serve President Joe Biden and students nationwide. Once Marten is sworn into office by the Biden administration, she will assume the federal post after more than three decades as an educator in San Diego, including eight years as superintendent of California’s second-largest district. Lamont Jackson, San Diego Unified Area superintendent, is serving as interim superintendent through the end of the year until a permanent replacement for Marten is found. Marten was previously a principal, teacher and administrator. She got her start as a teacher and schoolwide literacy specialist in the Poway Unified School District and has worked as an educator for 32 years, including 17 years as a teacher and stretches as a principal and vice-principal.

Several San Diego Unified high school campuses offer Pfizer vaccines -

UCSD will administer Pfizer vaccines on Wednesday at Morse High School and on Thursday at San Diego High School. “It is important to get as many people in our community vaccinated, and that includes eligible students,” said San Diego Unified Pediatrician Dr. Howard Taras. “Children used to account for 4 or 5% of all (COVID-19) cases. At the end of April, they accounted for 15% of cases, and the proportion of all cases that are children continues to rise.” The schools hosting the clinics have notified families about the free vaccines and provided them with a parent consent form that must be signed for students younger than 18 to receive a vaccine, according to SDUSD.

SDUSD to Provide Vaccination Clinics at Eight District High Schools

UC San Diego will administer the Pfizer vaccine from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a walk-in basis at the following schools:  Monday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 11, at Hoover, Crawford and Lincoln high schools.  Wednesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 13, at Morse and San Diego High schools Sharp will administer the Pfizer vaccine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m on a walk-in and appointment basis at the following schools: Monday, May 10, at Canyon Hills (formerly Serra) Tuesday, May 11, at Kearny High School Wednesday, May 12, at Clairemont High School
