SAN DIEGO
A 41-year-old man who died in November while jailed at the George Bailey Detention Facility succumbed to an accidental fentanyl overdose, sheriff’s officials reported Tuesday.
Omar Younes Hasenin one of eight San Diego County jail inmates who died within a 49-day span was found unresponsive in his cell at the Otay Mesa jail shortly after 3 p.m. Nov 3, according to a news release from sheriff’s Lt. Thomas Seiver.
Deputies and medical staff performed first aid until relieved by fire department paramedics, who pronounced Hasenin dead at the scene, Seiver said.
Hasenin’s death was first reported in November by The San Diego Union-Tribune. Tuesday’s news release was the first public disclosure of his death by the Sheriff’s Department, which last year generally stopped announcing jail deaths right away, often waiting until investigations were completed, which can take months or longer.
