Keeping Up With Ever-Changing Plans to Reopen Schools

The situation is the same with secondary schools in the Oceanside Unified School district, whose school board will meet Jan. 12 to decide its next move.   Sweetwater Union High School District has not reopened for in-person instruction yet, either,  and will meet in February to decide its future plans. On the other hand, districts like Poway Unified, which had reopened campuses, have suspended in-person instruction for two weeks after winter break. Vista Unified, which opened five days a week for students who wanted in-person instruction, ended up closing some schools temporarily due to quarantines. Now, middle schools in Vista Unified will have a two-week pause after winter break, returning Jan. 19. High schools there will have a three-week pause after winter break, back Jan. 26.

San Dieguito Unified School Reopening – NBC 7 San Diego

Jason Barry, who is also a parent, said, “It s unfortunately what was expected.” Barry said he feels the vote gave the union “too much power,” but he also felt there was movement toward a solution.  “I do feel hopeful there is a tone of wanting to work together, and I hope that’s not just lip service,” Barry said The issue now is what happens on Jan. 27 , when the district s schools are scheduled to begin the third quarter. If the region were able to flatten the curve and the state stay-home order is lifted for the Southern California region and San Diego County moves back to the red tier, would the district reopen?

Momentum to offer more in-person public school instruction in California comes to a halt

This report was updated at 11 a.m. Dec. 24, 2020 to include additional districts that will stay in distance learning mode until the end of the school year. With the coronavirus out of control in California, and the health system reaching a breaking point, momentum toward opening more public schools for in-person instruction has largely come to a halt. Some districts already offering in-person instruction are returning to distance learning, if only temporarily, as school leaders try to get through the holiday season and weather the full force of the pandemic’s spread. That’s according to an EdSource survey of the state’s 58 county offices of education conducted between Dec. 7 and Dec. 16. At the time, almost all counties in the state had moved onto the Tier One “purple” list, effectively prohibiting schools not already offering in-person instruction from doing so.

It was just last week that the students staged a protest to express their desire not to go back into the classroom next month. Now, the teachers are staging their own protest and taking the district to court.
