SAGINAW, MI As the week began, Saginaw was marred by a shooting in a rental house that left one person dead and four wounded. The house was a short-term rental, advertised on Facebook as an unofficial Airbnb.
As short-term rentals continue popping up in Saginaw and Bay City, officials in both cities are in the early stages of discussing the role they play,
assessing the pros and cons they can bring to communities, and what regulations could or should be enacted to strike a balance between residents and tourists.

Airbnb’s public policy director for North America, Laphonza Butler, spoke about the issue with WABE’s “All Things Considered” host Jim Burress.
“Housing affordability is surely an issue that a number of cities are figuring out how to really grapple with,” Butler told Burress shortly after the announcement.

Realtor Lauren Cromwell has transformed three of the four units in a Detroit-Shoreway property, which she calls the Grey Barn, into short-term rentals. A one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit has rents that start at $79 a night, though the total price actually comes to $141 with taxes and fees, including a cleaning fee.
